Official data released by the Chinese National Bureau of Statistics on Friday revealed that China witnessed another year of abundant summer grain harvest in 2024.
According to the survey conducted by the bureau, the country's total production of summer grains reached 149.78 million tons this year, representing a 2.5% increase or nearly 3.63 million tons on a yearly basis.
The area of summer grain cultivation in China rose to 26.613 million hectares in 2024, an increase of 4,500 hectares compared to the previous year, ensuring stability. Over 23 million hectares were cultivated with wheat, a 0.1% increase on a yearly basis, according to the Xinhua News Agency.
The yield of summer grains per hectare for this year reached 5,628 kilograms, marking a 2.5% increase or 135.4 kilograms compared to the previous year.
The central Chinese province of Henan achieved a summer grain production of approximately 37.86 million tons this year, the highest among all provinces.
In this context, during his inspection tour to Henan in May of last year, Chinese Premier Li Keqiang called for efforts to secure a bountiful summer grain harvest and promote innovative agricultural development.
The Chinese official emphasized the need to enhance mechanized harvesting across regions, prevent and control disasters, and make preparations for summer sowing. He also stressed the importance of effectively implementing the minimum grain purchase price system to ensure farmers' income.
