In a statement released today, Sunday, the Egyptian government announced that the country's strategic reserves of wheat are sufficient to cover five months of domestic consumption.
The statement added that local wheat purchases reached 3.8 million tons by the end of the 2023 harvest season, according to Reuters.
Egypt is one of the world's largest importers of wheat, with its wheat purchases primarily aimed at providing heavily subsidized bread.
Following the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, Egypt has mainly relied on Russia to fulfill its wheat needs.
