The European Union postpones its trade response to Washington until early August

The spokesperson for the European Union stated that the bloc does not intend to take any retaliatory trade actions against the United States before August 1, as trade relations between the two sides are experiencing rising tensions due to American trade decisions that have annoyed Brussels.

The spokesperson confirmed that the EU is still relying on dialogue to resolve trade disputes with Washington, committing to de-escalation at least until the end of July.

European Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič is scheduled to hold important talks tonight with U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai, in an attempt to bridge perspectives and contain trade escalation, with anticipation for the outcomes of these discussions that may determine the economic relationship between the world’s two largest economic blocs.

In this context, German Chancellor Merz made statements highlighting the importance of reaching a swift resolution to the ongoing trade tensions, confirming that he is in close contact with U.S. President Donald Trump and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to align positions and reach a mutually satisfactory settlement. He added that his country supports de-escalation but believes in the necessity of addressing any American actions that affect European interests with firmness.

Merz emphasized that the EU's current abstention from taking countermeasures does not mean it has relinquished its right to respond, warning against underestimating the European bloc's readiness to implement strong measures if the escalation from the U.S. side continues or if new tariffs are imposed on European exports.

This European stance reflects a clear desire to avoid direct confrontation with Washington, especially amidst the global geopolitical and economic fluctuations, while keeping all options open in the event negotiations fail.

Observers believe that the coming days will be crucial in determining whether the trade relationship between the United States and the EU will move toward de-escalation or explosion.
