Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) has announced a final investment decision for the pioneering Habshan carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) project, marking a significant move towards its decarbonization goals.
The groundbreaking initiative will be one of the largest carbon capture projects in the MENA region, with the capacity to capture and securely store 1.5 million tonnes per annum of carbon dioxide emissions deep underground. The project is expected to be completed in 2026.
By leveraging state-of-the-art technology, the Habshan CCUS project will triple ADNOC's carbon capture capacity to 2.3 million tonnes per annum, equivalent to removing over 500,000 gasoline-powered cars off the road annually.
ADNOC Gas will lead the project's construction, operation and maintenance. It will encompass carbon capture units at the Habshan gas plant, pipeline infrastructure, and a network of wells for CO2 injection and permanent storage.
This supports ADNOC's overall carbon management strategy to create an integrated platform connecting emissions sources and sequestration sites, expediting the achievement of its and the UAE's decarbonization goals.
Currently, ADNOC sources 100% renewable grid power and is progressing a $3.8 billion sub-sea transmission network that could reduce offshore carbon intensity by up to 50%. Its first carbon capture facility at Al Reyadah launched in 2016 with a capacity of 800,000 tons of CO2 annually.
