Nissan, Renault to announce restructured alliance deal in coming days

Three sources familiar with the matter have stated that Nissan and Renault have finalised their restructured alliance deal and plan to make an announcement in the coming days.

The framework agreement was announced in February but negotiations were delayed due to challenges by Nissan executives and directors who wanted better protection of Nissan's intellectual property.

Under the proposed deal, Nissan would take up to 15% of Renault's new electric vehicle unit, Ampere, while Renault would reduce its 43% stake in Nissan.

The delay complicated Nissan's efforts to balance the alliance. Nissan executives sought to rebalance the alliance built by former Chairman Carlos Ghosn after his ouster sent the automaker into turmoil.

Renault aims to list Ampere in an initial public offering in H1 2024, and sources have said the unit could be valued at up to $11.2 billion. Discussions have centred on how to deal with future intellectual property, including technology that may not yet exist.
