US oil futures inch higher as API inventory shows smaller increase in crude stocks

U.S. crude oil futures inched slightly above post-settlement levels Tuesday after the American Petroleum Institute showed a smaller-than-expected increase in U.S. weekly crude supplies.

Crude Oil WTI Futures, the U.S. benchmark, recently traded at $58.11 a barrel following the report after settling down 1.5% lower at $57.95 barrel.

U.S. crude inventories increased by about 1.9M barrels for the week ended Nov 21, smaller than expectations for a build of about 0.5M barrels.

Gasoline stockpiles increased by about 539,000 barrels, while distillate inventories -- the class of fuels that includes diesel and heating oil -- rose by about 753,000 barrels.

The official government inventory report is due Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. ET (1430 GMT)
